ABOUT / FAQ
Bloomfield Hills Middle School, home of the Lancers, sits on a 25-acre site at Quarton and Wing Lake roads. BHMS was named a National School of Excellence and has received State of Michigan Summary Accreditation. Bloomfield Hills Middle School enjoys a climate of motivated, high achieving students; dedicated, caring and highly competent staff; and involved, positive, supportive parents.
The teacher-student relationship is at the core of the instructional process. Teachers provide guidance for energetic, spirited students in the middle school years to actively participate in learning. Many staff members devote additional time to clubs, activities, coaching, and providing the caring environment that consistently creates special and cherished memories for students and their families.
Students are placed on academic teams called "blocks." In these block classes, students experience learning activities in the areas of math, science, social studies, and language arts. Block teachers plan and integrate instruction for students during their team planning periods. During this time, teachers also contact and communicate with parents, administration, and support staff.
In addition to block classes, exploratory classes are offered in areas such as foreign language, practical and fine arts, music, health, physical education and technology. The media center, the hub and heartbeat of the school, is equipped with computers that provide online catalogs and services for up-to-the-minute research. Media center staff work closely with classroom teachers to provide contemporary learning materials. In addition, two instructional computer labs are available for student use. Each classroom has a teacher "workstation" with Internet access.
Parents are strong supporters of BHMS and play an active role as volunteers in sharing their time and talents to support the BHMS community. The Parent Teacher Organization sponsors Coffee and Conversation with the principal, fun nights, and fun activities for parents and students including Father/Daughter or Father/Son, Mother/Daughter or Mother/Son events. The PTO publishes a column in Write From the Middle, a monthly newsletter that features a parent forum regarding students, activities or personal experiences. The newsletter serves as a link between home and school and includes a letter from the principal, announcements about events, news and notes from counselors, and highlights of student achievements and awards. Beginning in the 2001-2002 school year, the newsletter will be published online at this website.
Academics, athletics, before and after school activities, and strong parental and community support create an exciting, challenging experience for students and staff. We invite you to visit and experience the warmth and camaraderie of BHMS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who should I call if my child is ill or has to miss school for a medical appointment? You should call the attendance line at 341-6010. You can leave a message 24 hours a day. Call before 9 a.m. if your student is ill for the day. If your child has to leave school for an appointment, call the attendance line and leave the time and date you will need to pick him/her up for the appointment. You will have to come in to the office to sign your child out.
What if my child forgets his/her lunch? You can drop off the lunch in the office. We cannot deliver lunches, but we do place them in a special spot in the cafeteria. Students know where to look for them. It's a good idea for students to keep a few extra dollars in their locker or book bag for these kind of emergencies.
How do I use the lunch account system? Send in a check in any amount made out to Bloomfield Hills Schools. Put your child's name in the memo section of the check and have your child give the check to the cafeteria staff in the morning.
How can I get a Student Directory? You get one automatically if you join PTO and pay your PTO dues. Extra directories are available in the office for a charge of $3.50 for PTO members and $5.00 for non-PTO members.
What are the school hours? The school day begins at 8:15 and ends at 3:00. Students cannot be in the building unsupervised more than 15 minutes prior to or after that time. There is someone in the office to answer phone calls between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Does my child need a physical to participate in sports? Absolutely! The rules are fairly stiff on this one. The physical must be performed by the doctor no earlier than April 15 of the previous year. A new physical is required every year, and the doctor, the parent, and the athlete MUST sign the form provided by the District. Forms are available in all school offices, and physicals are available during the fall and spring at the High Schools on a prescribed date.
Are there opportunities for parent involvement? Please do become involved! Join PTO and sign up to work on a committee. Come to PTO meetings and sign up to work in the Health Clinic. If you work during the day, call the chairperson of a committee you are interested in and ask if there are opportunities for evening involvement.
How do I know what my child's homework is? Get on the web and go to a site called schoolnotes.com. You will have to enter the school's zip code, 48302, and then just click on your child's teacher. He or she will have posted up to date information regarding assignments and classroom business.
Who should I call if I have concerns? For concerns of a general nature, contact your child's teacher. You can call a coach or the athletic director for concerns relating to sports. For concerns which are of a serious or personal nature, feel free to contact your child's counselor, or the Associate Principal or Principal. No concern is small. If you are wondering whether or not to call us, please do!
